We then discover the history of conflict in Cambodia, the impact of landmines on local communities, and the opportunity to meet and see the HeroRATs in action at APOPO Visitor Centre. Experience the realities of humanitarian demining where rats are trained to save lives. Learn about the mine clearing process from the guides, enjoy a series of videos showing the Centre's work and read about how Cambodia became one of the most mine-affected countries in the world.

09:30: Take a step back in time and delve into the jewel of Cambodia’s crown, the temples of Angkor Wat Archaeological Park. We start the day at the South Gate of Angkor Thom, the Khmer Empire’s last capital built in the late-12th century. Inside the city’s ancient walls, we visit Bayon to stand in the shadows of its hundreds of giant smiling carved faces; 11th century Baphoun; and Elephant Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King.

Angkor Thom Temple:
Built at the end of the twelfth century, Angkor Thom was the Khmer Empire's capital city. Situated north of Angkor Wat and enclosing this 10 sq-km site with eight-metre-high walls, Angkor Thom translates to 'large city'. It became the new capital after the destruction of the former capital of Yasodharapura by the Chams, resulting in Jayavarman VII, a forceful King who expanded the Khmer Empire of Angkor, reinforcing the walls around Angkor Thom and building a moat. Angkor Thom contains a large collection of sites such as Bayon, Baphuon, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of Elephants and Jayavarman VII's palace although this no longer remains.
Terrace of the Leper King:
Situated within the towering confinements of Angkor Thom and just north of the Terrace of the Elephants, is the Terrace of the Leper. Named after the Leper King statue that was found here which is now located in Phnom Penh’s National Museum and has been replaced by a replica, according to local tales, the Leper King was King Yasovarman I who suffered from leprosy. Consisting of an inner wall which was buried under the soil during the construction of the outer wall resulted in the carvings of serpents, princes, princesses and demons remaining in good condition.

Lunch at leisure.
13:00 We visit root-riddled Ta Prohm, made famous after featuring in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider starring Angelina Jolie. We then head to incredible Angkor Wat, which dates back to the 12th century.

Ta Prohm Temple (1 hour visiting)
Considered one of the area’s most intriguing temples and certainly the most famous thanks to its appearance in the film Tomb Raider, Ta Prohm is a jungle temple that has been almost left untouched since it was discovered retaining much of its mystery. It is the perfect lost in the jungle temple as strangler figs and kapok trees entwine themselves around its ruins and their roots burst apart even the thickest of walls.

Angkor Wat Temple (2 hours visiting)
The pride of the country featuring on its flag, Angkor Wat is Cambodia’s ancient temple city which is one of the wonders of the oriental world. This masterpiece of decorative details and architectural style is awe-inspiring with its five famous towers that rise into the sky. It has a geometrical arrangement of numerous galleries adorned with stone images of celestial Apsara dancers, chambers and courtyards reflecting the skill of Khmer architecture and the devotion to its gods. Angkor Wat is surrounded by a moat and the most preserved of all the Angkor monuments.

17:30 Angkor Gondola or Kongkear Angkor Tour (45 min., max. 4 persons/boat)
Angkor Gondola is a unique traditional Khmer boat service located at the south gate of Angkor Thom on a small baray, a kind of reservoir typical of ancient Khmer water management. Enjoy the smooth glide as the sun sets over the gate of Angkor Thom or Prasat Chrung.

We round out our temple discovery enjoying a stunning sunset that transforms the sky into a palette of colours, viewed to Phnom Bakheng. However, for this temple, there is a maximum number of people allowed: 300pax.

Day 3: Siem Reap

Siem Reap – Boat trip on Tonle Sap Lake (by vehicle) (Breakfast, Dinner)
07:30 The Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in South-East Asia. This huge body of water stretches for 250 km – making it seem like an inland sea. At 8 am the driver will meet us at the hotel and set off on a 40-minute drive to Kampong Phluk, a village on the Tonle Sap Lake. A stop enroute gives us the chance to stroll around Rolous Market. At a small canal, we board a boat for the journey to Kampong Phluk where we can enjoy the scenery of wooden houses precariously perched on top of long thin poles that rise up to seven metres out of the river, depending on the tide. Life here takes place on the water. Villagers trade goods such as fruit and vegetables from their boats and we may also spot fishermen and children in their uniforms going to and from school.

We then transfer onto small canoes to explore the mangroves on the lookout for waterbirds, insects and other wildlife. Back on the boat, we continue to the Tonle Sap Lake to learn about the ecosystem and its rich biosphere reserve.

Please note: The Tonle Sap water levels vary and this can affect the itinerary. The high level is from mid-July to mid-February and the low level is from mid-Feb to mid-July.
ALTERNATIVE OPTION IN REPLACEMENT TO VISIT BOAT TRIP ON TONLE SAP DURING LOW LEVEL WATER
Today’s temple-hopping adventure starts at the more remote spots of Banteay Srei and Banteay Samre.

Banteay Srei Temple:
Rediscovered in the 1900s, Banteay Srei is remarkably preserved and considered to be a tribute to women due to its pink sandstone. Its small size and delicate carvings of Apsara, male and female divinities represent the skilled craftsmanship of sandstone carvings. Situated about 25 km north of Angkor, it is one of the region's oldest temples and the finest making it a firm favourite. Banteay Srei remains a sacred site for Khmer people so appropriate dress is required.

Banteay Samre Temple
Banteay Samre is a moderately low rise temple built in the typical Angkor Wat style which was dedicated to Hindu God Vishnu and famed for its intricate carvings of Buddhist depictions and Hindu mythological stories. About 19 km from Siem Reap, Banteay Samre consists of a central temple with four wings preceded by a hall and accompanied by two libraries which have undergone extensive restoration. Archaeologists working on this site which was overgrown with jungle took Banteay Samre apart to then reconstructed it as close to its former glory as possible.

We start our exploration of the religious structures that dot Angkor Archaeological Park at the less-visited temples found at Rolous Group. Sitting about 13 km from Siem Reap city, the group of small temples – Preah Ko, Bakong and Lolei – once served as the seat of Hariharalaya and was the first capital of the Khmer Empire.
- The Roluos Group once formed the second capital during the Angkor-era Khmer Empire. Collectively named after the town they sit outside, individually these ninth century brick and sandstone temples are called Lolei which has intricate Sanskrit inscriptions; Preah Ko which is one of Angkor's oldest temples and Bakong, Angkor’s first state temple. A climb of Bakong's stone stairways flanked with lion statues reveals fantastic views over this tranquil temple complex.
- Preah Ko Temple: Preah Ko is part of the Roluos Group, one of Angkor's oldest monuments forming the second capital of the Angkor-era. Built in honour of the god of Shiva, lions guard the steps to this Hindu temple which has six stone halls laid in two rows with grand Sanskrit elegantly inscribed on each tower's doorposts. Preah Ko is considered to retain some of Angkor's best plasterwork.
- Bakong Temple: Bakong is a sandstone monument that is protected by two moats which is the biggest temple of the Roluos Group making it also the most important. It served as the city's central temple and Indravarman I who ruled the Angkor-era Khmer from 877 to around 890, built it in honour of the god of Shiva. Within the inner enclosure, the complex has a pyramid-like shape with five levels to replicate the Hindu mythology's sacred mountain of Mount Meru which is protected by guardian lions. An exploration reveals some of the original plasterwork that covers some of the lower towers.
- Lolei Temple: This island temple is part of the Roluos Group which formed the Angkor-era Khmer Empire’s second capital. Built by King Yasovarman I to honour his ancestors, Lolei once sat in the water reservoir of Indratataka baray which was a source for drinking water and irrigation for the capital but now lays dry. This Hindu temple consists of four sanctuary towers in good condition, the two to the east are dedicated to male ancestors as illustrated by the armed dvarapala (warrior) carvings whilst the two on the east to his female ancestors as represented by the women carved into the sandstone.

Day 6: Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh – Half day morning by Cyclo Tour (Breakfast, Dinner)
Experience capital life and discover Phnom Penh from a cyclo before learning about traditional arts and the tireless work of an organisation that aims to break the cycle of poverty. After breakfast, we embark on a cyclo tour of the bustling capital. Highlights include the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, National Museum and Wat Phnom, an ancient hilltop temple.

Royal Palace:
Despite still being the official home for the King of Cambodia, the tranquillity of the Royal Palace is still very much open for visitors today. In 1866 the French built this iconic landmark enclosed by large yellow walls with several entrances reserved for different occasions, such as the northern gate also known as the funeral gate. This sprawling royal complex site consists of perfectly manicured gardens and gold-roofed buildings such as the Throne Hall, Banqueting Hall and the Dancing Pavilion which is still used by the royal family to hold banquets.

Silver Pagoda: The grandeur of the Silver Pagoda made of marble and lined with 5,000 silver floor tiles was built in 1962 to replace the wooden pagoda on the same site. The Silver Pagoda is also known as the ‘Temple of the Emerald Buddha’ due to its emerald Buddha said to be made of baccarat crystal and it is also famous for its 90-kg solid gold Buddha. Sitting within the Royal Palace complex, this is one of Cambodia's rare places of opulence illustrating Khmer culture.

National Museum: Situated just north of the Royal Palace grounds is the National Museum. Built in a Khmer style between 1917 and 1920 by a French architect, this terracotta building has a welcoming courtyard and the most important artefacts and sculptures from the Angkor era and before. This includes an eight-armed statue of the god of Vishnu found at Phnom Da and a giant pair of wrestling monkey from the Angkor collection. Other exhibits include a wooden barge, and bronze and pottery from the Funan and Chenla, Indravarman and Angkor periods.

Wat Phnom: A lady called Penh found this temple which led to the capital being given the name Phnom Penh translating to 'The hill of the lady Penh' after this tale. Situated in the middle of Cambodia's capital on a manmade, and the city's only hill, some twenty-seven metres high is Wat Phnom. Frequented by locals seeking luck in their personal and work lives, according to legend the original pagoda was built in 1373 to house four Buddha statues said to have been deposited by the waters of the Mekong.

Lunch is at leisure.

Afternoon, we continue to visit Toul Sleng Museum. This former Khmer Rouge prison camp, previously known as S-21, was the location for detention and torture of prisoners on a mass scale under Pol Pot's security force. 17,000 Cambodians and nine westerners lost their lives between 1975 and 1978 in Cambodia's biggest detention centre that was once a high school. A sobering visit, the building houses exhibits, paintings and photographs of many of the victims indicating its harrowing past.

Then head to Central Market which open from early in the morning until late in the afternoon, this shoppers' paradise housed in a yellow art deco style building has everything for sale, and more! The central dome of Phnom Penh's Central Market is a recognisable landmark across the city and the place to bargain for food, flowers, leather goods, antique coins and souvenirs. A browse of this Aladdin's Cave is not just for shopaholics as it also provides great photo opportunities and a chance to marvel at the myriad of items that includes fresh food, ornate jewellery and counterfeit goods.

Please note: Visitors to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda are required to keep their knees and shoulders covered.
